The dangers of recurring ear infections

The dangers of recurring ear infections

We all know how it goes: you have ear pain, you take some pills, drink some warm tea, and wait until it subsides. If it happens to you or your child multiple times, it is imperative that you seek medical help. Recurring ear infections can be very dangerous and can have serious repercussions later in life if not treated correctly.

  • Temporary hearing loss: An ear infection causes fluid in the ear that needs to be drained. This fluid can block the eardrum and cause temporary hearing loss. It is necessary to seek help from a doctor to drain the ear canal and to ensure that the infection is handled properly.
  • Ruptured eardrum: This is not only painful, but it will also cause permanent hearing loss. This happens when the infection moves behind the eardrum and pressure develops. If not detected in time, the infection can also affect the jaw and the teeth. It is vitally important to not neglect any symptom that affects the ears.
  • Inflammation of the tonsils: Many patients don’t have pain in their ears, but their tonsils may be inflamed and painful. As the tonsils are part of the lymphatic system, it is a warning that something is wrong. Left untreated, the infection could spread to the ears.
  • Teeth infection: If you have a tooth that is already damaged, an ear infection will affect it more than you think. The infection can easily reach the gums and jaw, and you will find yourself in need of a small surgery and antibiotic treatment. If the infection reaches the jaw, it can cause bone infection and this can have serious consequences to your teeth and your health in general.
