Whole food recipes for babies

The World Health Organization recommends babies to be breastfed exclusively for the first 6 months. After 6 months, most babies are generally ready to eat some real food. Even though babies under 1 year may not have a whole set of teeth, they do have very strong gums to help them chew.

Whole food is fresh vegetables and fruits and other simple homemade items that don’t have any processed ingredients. Here are a few recipes for babies who are following the ever-popular Baby Led Weaning (BLW) method.   • 2-ingredient Banana Pancakes – This is a classic choice for all BLW babies! Just one egg and one overripe banana. Blend it into pancake batter to make tiny pancakes that the babies can pick up and eat with their fingers. This recipe provides the necessary nutrients of iron, protein, and fiber.

 

  • Toasted Feta – Feta is very easy to make at home. Real feta is made from goat’s milk, but an imitation can be made from cow’s milk. Heat milk (organic preferably)  to the boiling point, then immediately add squeezed  lime juice or add a tablespoon of vinegar to separate the milk into curds and whey. Drain through a sieve (save the whey) and you’re left with ‘feta’. Refrigerate for an hour or so to solidify it. Slice it and toast in a pan with butter. Serve with fresh raspberries, blueberries or any other fruit.

 

  • Veggy-baked Frittata – grate 1 carrot and 1 zucchini, season with herbs and mix into 1 beaten egg. Spoon the mixture into a mini muffin tray and bake at 180 degrees for 20 minutes.
